SOAC recognizes and supports the critical role the general public plays in our community’s chain of survival upon encountering a medical emergency, car accident and a wide variety of emergencies.

The South Orangetown Ambulance Corps, an American Safety and Health Institute Training Center, offers a variety of American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) and American Heart Association (AHA) emergency medical training, emergency preparedness training and community outreach programs for the general public as well as Basic Life Support Courses and refresher programs for emergency response personnel and healthcare providers.

SOAC Training Division instructors are Corps members who are certified Emergency Medical Technicians, and have instructor certifications with AHA and/or ASHI.

COURSE LOCATION: Unless otherwise noted, classes are held at the South Orangetown Ambulance Corps Headquarters and EMS Training Center at 70 Independence Avenue in Tappan.


If youre attending a course to fulfill an employment or educational requirement, it's important to enroll in the applicable class. PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR EMPLOYER OR SCHOOL PRIOR TO ATTENDING to make sure the course you are taking will be acceptable. South Orangetown Ambulance Corps offers both ASHI and AHA. If you require a specific certification (for example, if your employer will only accept AHA CPR certification), please inform us of your requirement when registering.

CPR for Healthcare Provider and Medical Professionals:

These courses are designed for EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses, Lifeguards, Doctors, and anyone in the healthcare field, requiring CPR certification to the Basic Life Support (BLS) level. Certification is valid for 2 years. All BLS courses are based on the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and ECC.

Basic Life Support Full Certification Class (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION:: The full certification course teaches professional level CPR and AED. Emergency recognition. Instructor lead, hands-on skills training covering single-rescuer and team basic life support, high-quality CPR for adult, child and infant techniques. Relief of an obstructed airway (choking). When and how to perform rescue breathing. The $60 course fee includes a student handbook, hands-on skills training, practical and written test and certification card. Classes run approximately 3 hrs.

Basic Life Support Re-Certification Class (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: The re-certification course reviews professional level CPR and AED skills taught in the full certification course. The $50 fee includes hands-on skills training, a practical and written test, and certification card. (A student handbook is available to re-certification students upon request and/or when course material is updated to comply with AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC).


CPR and First Aid for Community and Workplace:

Our Community CPR and First Aid classes are the perfect choice for anyone in the community or occupational settings, who desires to learn valuable, life-saving skills to use in an emergency until EMS arrives. Ideal for childcare providers, workplace safety, Scout leaders, community sports coaches, teachers and school staff, parents, home care aids, etc. CPR and First Aid certifications are valid for 2 years. (Please note: Community classes do not meet the requirements needed for most medical professionals or lifeguards. Please check with your employer before registering for classes if you are doing so to meet a job requirement.)

Adult, Child, Infant CPR and AED (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: Upon completion of this course, participants will know how recognize an emergency, how to assess an unconscious, unresponsive person, determine when to call 911 and when to start CPR. The course provides comprehensive, instructor lead, hands-on skills training for performing CPR on adults, children and infants, as well as training in the proper use of an AED. Rescue breathing and dealing with an obstructed airway (choking), will also be covered. Personal safety of the rescuer, disease transmission precautions will also be discussed. The $35 course fee includes a student handbook and certification card. Classes run approximately 2.5  3 hours.

Adult-only CPR and AED is offered upon request with confirmation of a minimum of 6 participants.

Child and Infant only CPR and AED is offered upon request with confirmation of a minimum of 6 participants.

Basic First Aid (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: This program provides the bystander or victim with minimal or no medical equipment to access and begin initial care for a person who has been injured. This class covers first aid for both children and adults. It is recommended for teams in business and industry, school bus drivers, childcare workers, teachers, parents, babysitters and anyone who desires to help in an emergency. The course included instructor lead, hands-on skills practice. The course fee is $35, which includes a student handbook and certification card. Classes run approximately 3 hours.

Bloodborne Pathogens (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: This course meets OSHA guidelines and meant for anyone with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens. Ideal for healthcare workers, childcare workers, tattoo artists, health & fitness staff, security guards, law enforcement, fire service, hotel housekeeping, school personnel, home aids, etc. This course is offered for groups of 6 or more. Pet First Aid & CPR (ASHI)

DESCRIPTION: This course will teach you the correct way to handle, restrain and treat pets who become ill, injured, or are in need of resuscitation or emergency medical care. What to include in a pet first aid kit. Hands-on skills training for performing CPR and rescue breathing on your dog or cat. The course fee includes a student handbook and certification card.
